Dr. Travis Stork from The Doctors is in my kitchen today, talking about why organics matter to him, as well as his favorite canned food to always keep on hand.
Travis is a host of the Emmy award-winning talk show The Doctors. When off screen, he’s a faculty physician in the emergency department at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. He writes a monthly column for Men’s Health magazine, is one of the authors of the The Doctors 5-Minute Health Fixes: The Prescription for a Lifetime of Great Health (Rodale Books, Sep 2010) and the forthcoming Belly Fat Prescription (Rodale Books, Dec. 2010) with Men’s Health editor Peter Moore.
Why is living organic important to you?
It’s the right thing for the environment and the right thing for our health. Personally, I like not having to worry about pesticide residue on my produce!
What was your favorite food growing up?
Pizza!
What’s your go-to comfort food now?
Once again, pizza. It was my favorite food growing up and is still my favorite food as a grown-up. Except now I have graduated to whole-wheat crust, and I load it with veggies rather than the standard pepperoni of my childhood. So now it’s both a comfort food and healthy!
What’s the one thing in your kitchen you just couldn’t live without?
A few cans of black beans. I use them in so many meals. They’re tasty, loaded with protein and fiber, and affordable.
What magazine, website, book, album, or product are you most obsessed with right now?
We just started using the iPad on The Doctors, so I have been fiddling with it daily. I’m realizing it’s basically a supersized iPhone, and since it doesn’t fit in my pocket, my iPhone still gets more TLC.
What’s the most important news story today that you think we all need to pay more attention to?
As a doctor, I am concerned about how global warming and its environmental impact will affect the health of our children, grandchildren, and beyond. In medical school I started a senior seminar entitled Human Health and Global Environmental Change, and at the time, nobody seemed to care. So I’m happy that it is getting more attention.
Where do you get your news?
The New York Times. Luckily, there’s an app for it, too!
