Remember when you were a kid and you got all hot and sweaty from running around outside, and you smelled like crushed grass, dirt, and salt, and you were so hungry, hot, and thirsty, and then you got an orange cream popsicle and you knew in your soul that summer was good? Remember that? I do.

The Float of the Month for August evokes that same childhood summer joy, and hits the spot on a hot summer day, night, or even morning if you dare. I use Izze sodas, but I wish the brand were organic. At least they are fruit-based and don’t contain any high-fructose corn syrup. But if you can find an organic orange soda, go for it!

Orange Cream Float

Ingredients:

  • Ice
  • 1 clementine flavor Izze soda
  • 1 scoop vanilla ice cream
  • 1 slice fresh orange (or lime, for a twist!)
  • 1 straw

Directions:

1. Fill a large glass halfway with ice. The ice dilutes the sweetness of the soda and ice cream and makes sure that it’s all cold, cold, cold which I love, love, love.

2. Add the soda to almost the top of the glass.

3. Next, add one scoop of ice cream.

4. Use a slice of orange or lime as a garnish (the fresh scent adds to the citrusy-ness of it all).

5. Mix it a bit, and wait a minute to let the ice cream melt into the soda.

6. Add straw.

7. Slurp it down! (Or up?)

I DO remember how wonderful those orange creamsicles and how wonderful they were with all of the other elements. I also remember the joy of running into the house screaming “THEICECREAMMANISCOMINGGGGGG!!!!” like it was yesterday. These look delicious and a perfect way to top off a summer’s day.

I’m with the COOKBOOK APPRENTICE! I remember all of us watching out for the ice cream truck and yelling the very same thing! The kids in the neighborhood would line up for those cool and frosty treats in the dead heat of summer. Maria, you have managed to evoke long suppressed memories with the orange drink. The orange cream sickles were great, but my favorites were and still are, NUTTY BUDDYS and soft twirled vanilla ice cream on a cone. The flavor of the milk was much better then and richer tasting than today. Life was good.

My favorite is a shake made with vanilla ice cream and Henry Weinharts root beer. It’s about a twice a year treat so I don’t even know what’s in the root beer, just that it’s the best I’ve tried.

mmm creamsicles…and remember the 5 cent rootbeer popsicles that were double and as big as a fudgesicle is now? ok, i’m telling my age…
when my oldest daughter was little, not wanting to give in to all that sugar in her diet we called the icecream truck the ‘music’ truck and she’d dance in the window and laugh. Then grandma watched her one day and when the truck came she danced and grandma said “ohhhh you want an icecream”…well that was the end of the music truck! grandma’s gone now, and the baby is 26…how summer’s and time fly when you’re having fun! happy canning and slurping.
