Texas (South by Southwest Eco),
Here I Come!

I’ve always wanted to go to “SXSW,” as it is known by insiders or anyone on Twitter. And you all know me, I don’t really care about being seen or networking, I would just want to roam and rock out at the music part! Yes, I even watched all 50 minutes of Bruce Springsteen’s keynote speech from this year’s SXSW online.  So when I heard there was a new SXSW Eco, I was intrigued. And when they asked me to be on a panel, I said yes—especially because the panel topic is near and dear to my heart: the intersection between the environment and health.

So this week, on Thursday in fact, I will be on a panel with a fascinating and esteemed group of women who will all be discussing the topic “What’s Good For Your Health Is Good for the Planet“.

Organized by Mashari Perry, vice president of GMMB and a “global shaper” for the World Economic Forum, the panel consists of Dr. Deanna Hoelscher, a professor in health promotion at the University of Texas; Osprey Orielle Lake, who is founder of Woman’s Earth and Climate Caucus; Gloria Flora, who is the ecology fellow at Post Carbon Institute; and me. I can’t tell you exactly what will happen, but I can tell you it is sure to be interesting! So if you are already going, please stop by. Nothing is worse than being on a panel presenting to an empty room (although I’ve done it before and will probably do it again). If you aren’t signed up, there might still be time to show up.  For those of you who can’t come, check out my next blog, where I will tell you what I want to say about the topic—and hope I don’t FORGET to say during the panel!

Sometimes—especially when times are tough—it seems like a lot of time, money, and work to travel someplace far away to go to a conference…but every time I rally myself to do it, I realize that something great always happens, even if it’s just time on a plane to think, write, and read. (I would have never been able to finish reading the 2012 Farm Bill if it weren’t for plane rides!) So I don’t expect any magic to happen, and yet, I have faith that some magic will happen. I’m looking forward to the adventure!

Ok, how awesome that SXSW is growing to include ‘eco’, AND that you get to go. I can’t wait for your speech details, and for a trip/event recap.
