by guest blogger Deirdre Imus. Amid some recent dour news about ingredients in personal care products causing diabetes and muscle weakness, Johnson & Johnson provided a rare bright light when the company announced plans to remove dangerous chemicals—such as formaldehyde—from its shampoos, lotions, facial cleansers, and more. It is a sweeping gesture, and one that other companies would be wise to mimic.

What Your Gut Is Telling You
When I look back at all the biggest mistakes I’ve made in my life, I can clearly remember a moment when I consciously overrode what my gut was telling me. Our “gut” used in this respect seems more like a mystical, spiritual force that may or may not truly exist (although looking down I can see mine does!). But it should be remembered that our actual guts are filled with living organisms whose importance to the health of our entire body has been undervalued if not downright ignored

The Real Scoop on the Raw Food Diet
by guest blogger Isaac Eliaz, MD. What is the healthiest diet? This question is being asked over and over again, and is being answered in a variety of different ways. The truth is there is no single correct answer. One approach that is gaining popularity is the raw food diet, where dieters adhere to a regimen of strictly uncooked food. The raw food diet has proponents and critics, but it’s important to get the facts before adopting 100% raw food or any specialized diet over the long term.

An Amazing Alternative to
Prescription Pills
by guest blogger Mark A. Moyad, MD, MPH. What if there was a safe alternative to some of the most used prescription drugs on the market? Turns out there is, but you probably won’t hear about it from your doctor. Why? Because it’s not a prescription drug, it’s a supplement. That’s right, an over-the-counter supplement.

How to Get More Hours in the Day
by guest blogger Maya Rodale. Getting up wicked early basically feels like a head start. I’ve become hooked on the feeling of having accomplished something before 9:00 a.m. That way, no matter what the day throws at me, I’ve gotten something important done. Here are my tips for turning yourself into a morning person, so you, too, can have a more useful day:

Kitchen Suppers
The other day on my way to work, Eve and I were listening to a story about the News Corp. hacking scandal on the BBC Newshour and there was a mention of “kitchen suppers.” Someone high up in the News Corp. organization was having kitchen suppers with someone high up in the British Government…was it even the prime minister? The phrase implied meals with an intimacy and casualness that resonated with me, even as it showed the inappropriateness between the perpetrators. I decided I liked the term but should research it further.

The 11 Best Sources of Magnesium
by guest blogger Morley Robbins. I’m often asked, “Where can I find more magnesium in my diet?” That’s such an important question! In fact, it’s usually the second question people ask me after first wanting to know how its deficiency is related to most, if not all, of their day-to-day symptoms. Magnesium is pervasive in many nutrient-dense foods that our ancestors knew about and relied upon to nourish their “batteries” with this vital master electrolyte. Here are the best sources…

What We Learn From Racing
by guest blogger Maya Rodale. Once upon a time, I ran a race. It was the 800-meter dash during my sixth grade field day. What happened in this race has taken on Great Significance of Epic Proportions. What happened? I came in second. What followed were years of second place races, metaphorically speaking, in which I did pretty well without putting in a huge ton of effort. B+ grades instead of A’s, basically. Enjoying opportunities that arrived, but not always seeking and seizing them. In other words, I became content looking at the back of people’s heads.
