The Importance of Taking a Vacation

I am taking a vacation, and I’m not going to apologize for it. There’s never a good time. There’s always more work to be done, and things to be cleaned up and organized at home. Always. But studies have shown that people who take vacations are healthier and live longer than people who don’t, and I believe that rest and reflection are essential to happiness, and for gathering the strength needed to do what must be done for the rest of the year.

I’m not going anywhere fancy. I’m packing up the truck and driving up to Maine to pick up my daughter at camp, and we’ll be stopping at beaches on the way up and on the way back. Yes, I will be eating lobster rolls. That’s about as far as my ambition is taking me right now. I don’t even have a pile of books that Must Be Read. And as far as I’m concerned, it’s up to the Republicans, Tea Partyists, and Democrats to get everything all resolved by the time I get back. (For lord’s sake, it’s time to stop the insanity.) For the next two weeks, I’m not going to think about it too much.

During the year, I write three blog posts a week. Original posts! No faking. I test all the recipes. I think all the original thoughts. Those are my exclamation points, parentheses, and fuzzy iPhone pictures. But for the next two weeks, I’m taking a break. Even a blogger needs a break sometimes. I’m sure I’ll think of lots of things to write about. But I’m not going to worry about it either way. In the meantime, friends, family, and coworkers will be populating my blog with new and interesting stuff. And for that, I am very grateful! I kind of need the break.

I hope y’all get a summer break, too…even if it’s just a not-fancy little one.

    Maria-ji,

    Have a wonderful time!

If you go to the place “where your memoir begins”, open all of your cells and LET IN THE LIGHT:-)

    Have a great holiday.
After years of only being able to get away for a few days, we’ve moved to a holiday location 10 minuets from the beach, so it doesn’t matter any more, holiday all the time right outside the door. yippee! 🙂

Great! My husband and I was just discussing yesterday where I’ll next vacation will be. I was thinking New England, come late September, early October. For now, the ferry from Lewes to Cape May, but first to Cape Henlopen for a few days. When it’s not too hot, of course!!! Not a summer person!

We are headed to Maine this week for vacation too, but to Webb Lake in the western mountains of Maine. If you get a chance take a trip inland away from the coast and see some beautiful scenery.

Life can be a vacation if your thinking makes it so…yes? Where does the word work comes from? Perception!

What a shame that people don’t know how to live their lives in such a way as to make a vacation unnecessary.

fyi… The Maine shore ocean water = ice water. Lakes are much warmer if you decide to go swimming!

Maria, I wish you a restful and fulfilling time away from your desk. Work is in a writer’s head, so I hope that you can give your thoughts a vacation too, just a bit.

Donna, I wish I could be on that ferry too! A wonderful trip. I grew up in Wildwood Crest and miss the ocean incredibly now that I live in the central US. Cape May is a fantastic place!
