Two days. That’s all it took.

When I was at the spa in Australia, the chefs did not use any salt in their food, so for two days I was salt free. At first, I balked. Soup without salt can be a very sad thing at first. But a funny thing happened. By the end of the two days I had recalibrated my tastebuds and suddenly, I didn’t need salt.

Leaving the spa was a challenge. But in Australia I ate well and avoided putting salt on anything. Then I came back to the States. Suddenly, my favorite restaurant was too salty!

I’ve always been a salt lover, and have used salt liberally in my cooking. But it’s increasingly clear there are lots of health reasons why we should all cut back on salt. From high blood pressure to risk of stroke to just the fact that it makes you feel bloated, there are good reasons to cut back.

This blog is to assure you that it’s possible. And all it takes is two days.

    A few years ago, wanting to decrease the amount of salt I consumed, I decided to use salt-free butter. I immediately discovered certain foods no longer tasted “right” – and I realized I’d been using butter for its salt content! Baked potatoes, toast, corn on the cob, fried eggs – they just weren’t the same w/salt-free butter. A valuable lesson was learned and now I’m more aware of and better able to moderate my salt intake. Oh, but pickles, olives and mustard still taste so yummy… 🙂

    My nutritional counselor/doctor says to have a 1/2 teaspoon of celtic sea salt a day. From what I read about it, salt with other minerals intact is good for you. I love it but the hard part is cutting out the other processed foods with regular salt added.

    I had a friend who was accidentally hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle. He momentarily removed his bicycle helmet at the time.
    Because of his injury he could not taste his food, so he never added salt to it. Over time he was feeling weak, so he had some blood tests done, and it was revealed that he lacked salt in his diet. Once he used salt on his food, apparently he regained his strength.

    Foods come naturally with sodium. We need to learn how to enhance the favors of foods with herbs and spices. I love fresh herbs like chives, Basel, and thyme. Grow them in the summer and save what is left over as dried for the winter.
